Effercitrate is a treatment for the symptoms of Cystitis and as initial therapy in mild symptomatic Cystitis prior to an MSU (Midstream Specimen of Urine) result.
How Effercitrate Tablets work
Effercitrate comes in the form of an effervescent tablet. When fully dissolved in water, the solution contains Potassium citrate and Citric acid. Potassium citrate makes the urine more alkaline, which helps soothe the bladder and urethra lining, helping to relieve the discomfort caused by the infection.
What is Cystitis
Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder resulting in an urgent and frequent need to urinate and pain or stinging when you urinate. This medicine provides relief by making the urine less acidic.
It’s a common type of urinary tract infection (UTI), particularly in women, and is usually more of a nuisance than a cause for serious concern.
Mild cases will often get better by themselves within a few days.
But some people experience episodes of cystitis frequently and may need regular or long-term treatment.
There’s also a chance that cystitis could lead to a more serious kidney infection in some cases, so it’s important to seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve.
The main symptoms of cystitis include:
pain, burning or stinging when you pee
needing to pee more often and urgently than normal
urine that’s dark, cloudy or strong smelling
pain low down in your tummy
feeling generally unwell, achy, sick and tired
Possible symptoms in young children include:
pain in their tummy
needing to pee urgently or more often
a high temperature (fever) of 38C or above
weakness or irritability
reduced appetite and vomiting
What can increase your risk of getting Cystitis?
Most cases are thought to occur when bacteria that live harmlessly in the bowel or on the skin get into the bladder through the tube that carries urine out of your body (urethra).
It’s not always clear how this happens.
But some things can increase your risk of getting it, including:
having sex
wiping your bottom from back to front after going to the toilet
having a thin tube inserted into the urethra to drain the bladder (urinary catheter)
Women may get cystitis more often than men because their bottom (anus) is closer to their urethra and their urethra is much shorter, which means bacteria may be able to get into the bladder more easily.
What can help with Cystitis?
If you have been having mild symptoms for less than 3 days or you have had cystitis before and do not feel you need to see a GP, you may want to treat your symptoms at home or ask a pharmacist for advice.
hold a hot water bottle on your tummy or between your thighs
avoid having sex
pee frequently
wipe from front to back when you go to the toilet
gently wash around your genitals with a skin-sensitive soap
Some people believe that cranberry drinks and products that reduce the acidity of their urine (such as sodium bicarbonate or potassium citrate) will help.

Adults and Children over 6 years: Two tablets to be dissolved in a glass of water up to three times daily.
Children under 6 years: No recommended.
Elderly: As adult dose. Sufficient should be given to render and maintain the urine alkaline.
Product Details
Contraindications :
Contraindicated in hyperkalaemia from any cause, renal
dysfunction particularly with oliguria, ventricular arrhythmias, untreated Addison’s disease and acute dehydration.
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to potassium citrate, citric acid or any of the other ingredients.
Special Warnings and Precautions for Use
Caution should be observed in patients with kidney disease, hypertension or heart disease.
Use with caution in elderly patients as potassium excretion is reduced increasing the risk of hyperkalaemia. If symptoms persist or worsen, patients should seek medical advice.
Interactions with other medicinal products
Potassium salts should not be co-administered with other potassium containing medicines, potassium sparing diuretics, aldosterone antagonists or other medicines that increase
potassium levels such as angiotensin-II receptor antagonists, ACE inhibitors, aliskiren, cyclosporine and tacrolimus.
The activity of cardiac glycosides is to some extent dependent upon serum potassium levels, therefore, there is a possible interaction and caution is advised.
In patients with acidosis, the acid-base balance should be monitored.
In patients with hypertension, correction of hypokalaemia may lower blood pressure. Citrates alkalise the urine and thus may alter the urinary excretion of a number of drugs such as salicylates, tetracyclines and barbiturates, and may also prolong the half-life of basic drugs such as sympathomimetics and stimulants.
The anti-bacterial activity of nitrofurantoin and methenamine is diminished.
Side Effects
Gastric irritation may occur.
The tablets should always be well diluted with water.
Gastric effects may be minimised by taking with, or after meals
