What is a night cough?
Coughing starts when part of your breathing passage becomes inflamed or irritated.
The cough is simply a reflex to try and remove the irritant and clear the airway.
Coughs can either be productive (producing excess mucus or phlegm) or unproductive (producing no mucus or phlegm).
Chesty and mucus coughs are productive, whereas dry and tickly coughs are unproductive.
Tips and advice
If your child is hot/ feverish: increase the amount of fluid your child normally drinks.
Lower their temperature with paracetamol or ibruprofen medicine as per the manufacturer guidance.
For coughs: Although it is distressing to hear your child cough, in fact coughing helps clear phlegm on the chest and mucus from the nose. Give your child plenty of warm clear fluids to drink.
