What is a Sore Throat?

Sore throats can be very common and usually nothing to worry about. They normally get better by themselves within a week.

Sore throats are usually caused by viruses (like cold or flu) or from smoking. Very occasionally they can be caused by bacteria.

A sore throat can also be caused by:

If you have a sore throat you might have:

  • a painful throat, especially when swallowing
  • a dry, scratchy throat
  • redness in the back of your mouth
  • bad breath
  • a mild cough
  • swollen neck glands

The symptoms are similar for children, but children can also get a temperature and appear less active.

See a GP if:

  • your sore throat does not improve after a week

Benzydamine mouthwash and Benzydamine spray are used for treating pain and inflammation (redness, swelling and a feeling of heat) in the throat or mouth.Benzydamine Mouthwash and Benzydamine Spray both contain benzydamine hydrochloride, one of a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).Both Benzydamine Mouthwash and Benzydamine Spray are used to treat many painful conditions affecting the throat or mouth including: • Sore throat • Sore tongue or gums • Mouth ulcers • Discomfort caused by dentures • Pain after dental surgery

How To Use

How To Use Benzydamine Spray

ADULTS AND ELDERLY4 to 8 sprays, 1½ – 3 hourly.

Paediatric population

CHILDREN (6-12)4 sprays, 1½ – 3 hourly.

CHILDREN UNDER 6One spray to be administered per 4 kg body weight, up to a maximum of 4 sprays, 1½ – 3 hourly.

Because of the small amount of drug applied, elderly patients can receive the same dose as adults.

Special warnings and precautions for use

Benzydamine spray use is not advisable in patients with hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid or other NSAIDs.

Bronchospasm may be precipitated in patients suffering from or with a previous history of bronchial asthma. Caution should be exercised in these patients.

Avoid contact with the eyes.

If the condition is aggravated or not improved use should cease.

Benzydamine Spray/Benzydamine 0.15% w/v Oromucosal Spray contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). It also contains propylene glycol which may cause skin irritation.

Benzydamine Mouth Spray/Benzydamine 0.15% w/v Oromucosal Spray contains small amounts of ethanol (alcohol), less than 100 mg per dose.

Fertility, pregnancy, and lactation

Pregnancy

Benzydamine 0.15% Oromucosal Spray should not be used in pregnancy

Breast-feeding

Benzydamine 0.15% Oromucosal Spray should not be used during lactation unless considered essential by the physician.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are numbness and a stinging feeling in the mouth. The stinging has been reported to disappear upon the continuation of the treatment, however, if it persists it is recommended that treatment be discontinued.

Ingredients

Ingredients of Benzydamine Spray

Benzydamine hydrochloride 0.15% w/v.

Each spray contains 262.5 micrograms of benzydamine hydrochloride.

Excipients with known effect

Ethanol (96%) 8.1 %w/v

Methyl parahydroxybenzoate 0.1 %w/v

It also contains propylene glycol.
