WHAT IS CANESTEN CREAM 1% Fingicidal Cream AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Canesten Cream 1% Fungicidal – Antifungal cream is used to treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, fungal nappy rash, and fungal sweat rash. It is also used to relieve irritation of the vulva (external thrush) or the end of the penis, which may be associated with thrush.
If you are unsure whether you (or your baby if treating nappy rash) have one of these fungal skin infections, seek the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.
The active substance in Canesten Cream is clotrimazole. Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called imidazoles and is an antifungal agent which fights the cause of fungal skin infections.
Common types of Fungal skin Infections
Athlete’s foot
Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that affects the feet. You can usually treat it with creams, sprays or powders from a pharmacy, but it can keep coming back.
One of the main symptoms of an Athlete’s foot is itchy white patches between your toes.
It can also cause sore and flaky patches on your feet.
The skin can look red, but this may be less noticeable on brown or black skin.
Sometimes the skin on your feet may become cracked or bleed.
Athlete’s feet can also affect the soles or sides of your feet. It sometimes causes fluid-filled blisters.
Ringworm:
Ringworm is a common fungal infection. It’s not caused by worms. You can usually buy medicine from a pharmacy to treat it.
The main symptom of ringworm is a rash. It may look red, silver, or darker than the surrounding skin, depending on your skin tone.
The rash may be scaly, dry, swollen, or itchy.
Ringworm can appear anywhere on the body, including the scalp (tinea capitis) and groin (jock itch).
It can be passed on through close contact
Thrush:
Thrush is a common yeast infection that affects men and women. It’s usually harmless but it can be uncomfortable and keep coming back. It is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

THRUSH IN OTHER AREAS
Thrush can affect other areas of skin, such as the armpits, groin, and between the fingers.
This usually causes a red, itchy or painful rash that scales over with white or yellow discharge. The rash may not be so obvious on darker skin.

How To Use
How To Use
There is no separate dosage schedule for the young or elderly.
The cream should be applied thinly 2-3 times daily and rubbed in gently. A strip of cream (½ cm long) is enough to treat an area of about the size of the hand. Treatment should be continued for at least one month for dermatophyte infections and at least two weeks for candidal infections.
If the feet are infected they should be washed and dried, especially between the toes, before applying the cream.

Fertility:
No human studies of the effects of clotrimazole on fertility have been performed; however, animal studies have not demonstrated any effects of the drug on fertility.
Pregnancy:
There is a limited amount of data from the use of clotrimazole in pregnant women. Animal studies with clotrimazole have shown reproductive toxicity at high oral doses (see section 5.3). At the low systemic exposures of clotrimazole following topical treatment, harmful effects with respect to reproductive toxicity are not predicted. Clotrimazole can be used during pregnancy, but only under the supervision of a physician or midwife.
Lactation:
Available pharmacodynamic/toxicological data in animals have shown excretion of clotrimazole/metabolites in milk after intravenous administration (see section 5.3). A risk to the suckling child cannot be excluded. A decision must be made whether to discontinue breast-feeding or to discontinue/abstain from clotrimazole therapy taking into account the benefit of breast-feeding for the child and the benefit of therapy for the woman.
Side Effects of Canesten Cream 1% Fungicidal
As the listed undesirable effects are based on spontaneous reports, assigning an accurate frequency of occurrence for each is not possible.
Immune system disorders: an allergic reaction (syncope, hypotension, dyspnea, urticaria).
What Canesten® Antifungal Cream contains:
• The active substance is clotrimazole at a strength of 1% w/w.
• The other ingredients are benzyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, sorbitan stearate, cetyl palmitate, cetostearyl alcohol, octyldodecanol and purified water.
Side Effects
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS Like all medicines, Canesten Antifungal Cream can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. As with all medicines, some people may be allergic to the cream. If you or your baby are allergic, a reaction will occur soon after you start using it. If you or your baby experience an allergic reaction, stop using Canesten Antifungal Cream and tell your doctor straight away or contact the Accident and Emergency Department of your nearest hospital. Signs of an allergic reaction may include: • Rash. • Swallowing or breathing problems. • Swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue. • Weakness, feeling dizzy or faint. • Nausea. After you apply the cream you might experience: • Itching, rash, blisters, burning, discomfort, swelling, irritation, redness or peeling of skin.
